Domaine Camille Thiriet Bourgogne Rouge Les Chagniots comes from a small parcel of sixty-year-old Pinot Noir directly below Domaine d’Ardhuy’s Clos des Langres at Corgoloin.

Regional Bourgogne Rouge covers an enormous spread of land and quality, and the wines worth seeking out are almost always those from a named parcel next to something better. Les Chagniots qualifies: the vines sit under the Clos des Langres at the southern tip of the Côte de Nuits and are old enough to give real concentration. The name is usually explained as a reference to small oak trees, though in the local patois chaignots denotes iron-rich minerals, which would fit the reddish, iron-oxide soils found here. This was the first release of the wine under Camille Thiriet’s name and it fermented with 60 per cent whole bunches. It is sweet-fruited and openly seductive, but it carries a seriousness that regional Burgundy rarely does, and it is priced well below what the fruit source would justify.

Ready now and good for five or six years. Serve at 16-18°C with roast chicken, charcuterie or a mushroom tart.
