Description
Domaine Chermette Beaujolais Les Griottes is the estate’s entry-level Gamay, grown on dark granite around the family home at Saint-Vérand in southern Beaujolais.
Southern Beaujolais, the stretch below the ten named crus, is the source of most straight Beaujolais, and quality there rests almost entirely on the grower. The Chermette family works from Saint-Vérand, where the vines for this cuvée are 30 to 40 years old and rooted in dark granite. The winemaking has not changed in decades: traditional whole-bunch, semi-carbonic fermentation in concrete tanks, then maturation split between tank and old oak casks, with nothing new in the cellar to mark the fruit. Where the estate’s Moulin-à-Vent and Fleurie are made for the cellar, the aim here is deliberately different — a light to medium-bodied wine with bright cherry and wild plum fruit and enough freshness to carry a second glass. The name comes from the griottes, or morello cherries, growing beside the vines.
Drink now and over the next two years. Serve lightly chilled at 14-16°C with charcuterie, roast chicken or a tomato-based pasta.
