Description
Domaine Chermette Beaujolais Les Griottes is the family’s everyday Gamay, named for the cherry trees flanking the vineyard, here in a 375ml half bottle.
Saint-Vérand, in southern Beaujolais where the Chermette family has its base, sits below the cru villages and gives the region’s most immediate style of Gamay. The fruit comes from 30- to 40-year-old vines on the dark granite soils around the homestead. Where the domaine’s Moulin-à-Vent and Fleurie are built for the cellar, the intention here is something light to medium-bodied, bright and cherry-fruited. The winemaking has been unchanged for decades: whole-bunch, semi-carbonic fermentation in concrete tanks, then maturation in a combination of tank and old oak casks, with no new wood involved. The half-bottle format suits a wine of this kind, holding enough for two decent glasses.
Drink young, within a year or two. Serve at 16°C, or lightly chilled, with charcuterie, roast chicken or a cheese plate.
