Description
Domaine Chermette Fleurie Poncié comes from a 4.5-hectare site of pink granite on the high ridge above the village, recently proposed for premier cru status.
Fleurie is the most perfumed of the Beaujolais crus, and Poncié is one of a handful of celebrated highland terroirs strung along the ridge high above the village, alongside sites such as Roche Guillon. Domaine Chermette works 4.5 hectares there, planted to vines around forty-five years of age on pink granite. The winemaking is traditional and deliberately unassertive: natural whole-bunch fermentation in large concrete vats, then ageing in large old foudres that add no flavour of their own, so what reaches the glass is the site. Poncié is one of seven Fleurie vineyards recently put forward for premier cru classification. Pierre-Marie Chermette describes the style he is after as élégant et aérien, elegant and lifted, and among his crus this is the most seductive and the most graceful, particularly while young.
Lovely now and good for five or six years. Serve at 16-18°C, or lightly chilled, with roast chicken, charcuterie or a soft washed-rind cheese.
