Description
Domaine Chermette Fleurie Poncié is a cru Beaujolais from 45-year-old vines on pink granite, offered in a half bottle.
Fleurie is the most perfumed of the ten Beaujolais crus, its reputation built on decomposed pink granite that gives Gamay a lifted, silky character rather than the ferrous grip of neighbouring Moulin-à-Vent. Domaine Chermette, based at Saint-Vérand in the south of the region, is run by Jean-Paul and Pierre-Marie Chermette and has been one of the steadiest names in Beaujolais for four decades. The Poncié cuvée comes from a 4.5-hectare site of 45-year-old vines on those pink granite soils. Poncié is one of a handful of celebrated highland terroirs strung along the ridge above the village, Roche Guillon being another. Winemaking is traditional: natural whole-bunch ferments in large concrete vats, then ageing in large old foudres rather than barrique, which keeps the wood out of the way. It is Chermette's most seductive and graceful cru bottling, particularly in its youth.
Drink now or over the next five years. Serve lightly chilled at 14-16°C with charcuterie, roast chicken or a mushroom tart.
