Description

Domaine Chermette Moulin à Vent Les Trois Roches is named for the three rocky parcels of Rochegrès, Roche Noire and La Rochelle that make up the blend.

Moulin-à-Vent is the most structured and longest-lived of the Beaujolais crus, and the reason usually given is the manganese in its pink granite soils, which stresses the vines and restricts yields. Domaine Chermette, based at Le Vissoux under Pierre-Marie Chermette, draws this cuvée from three sites, each contributing something distinct. La Rochelle, which overlooks the famous windmill, brings structure; the east-facing Rochegrès contributes finesse and supple tannin; and Roche Noire adds liveliness and juicy fruit. The average vine age across the three is now over 40 years. What the parcels share is that concentration of manganese, which runs an unmistakable mineral thread through the finished wine. Winemaking follows the domaine's traditional line, without chaptalisation and with a light hand in the cellar.

Approachable young but capable of eight to ten years in bottle, it suits roast duck, beef or a firm cheese. Serve at 16 degrees.
