Description
Domaine Chermette Moulin-à-Vent Les Trois Roches takes its name from three rocky parcels whose manganese-rich soils give the wine its ferrous thread.
Moulin-à-Vent is the most structured of the ten Beaujolais crus, and Domaine Chermette, run by Pierre-Marie Chermette from Saint-Vérand, treats it accordingly. Les Trois Roches is named for the three parcels behind it: Rochegrès, Roche Noire and La Rochelle, where the vines now average more than forty years of age. La Rochelle, which overlooks the famous windmill, brings structure; east-facing Rochegrès contributes finesse and supple tannins; Roche Noire supplies liveliness and juicy fruit. What the three sites share is a concentration of manganese in the soil, which runs an unmistakable mineral, faintly ferrous thread through the finished wine. Unlike Chermette's other crus, this one is given a portion of barrique ageing, around twenty per cent, which says something about the intensity of the site. This is Gamay made for the cellar as much as for the table.
Rewarding now but worth two or three years in bottle first. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, terrine or a mushroom pie.
