Description
Domaine Chermette Moulin à Vent Les Trois Roches is a Beaujolais cru Gamay named for the three rocky parcels that make it, offered in a half bottle.
Moulin-à-Vent is the most structured of the ten Beaujolais crus, its reputation resting on manganese-rich pink granite soils that give the wines an unusually firm, ferrous frame. Domaine Chermette, run by Jean-Paul and Pierre-Marie Chermette at Saint-Vérand, is one of the reference addresses of the region. Les Trois Roches takes its name from Rochegrès, Roche Noire and Rochelle, three parcels whose vines now average more than forty years. Pierre-Marie describes La Rochelle, which overlooks the famous windmill, as the source of structure, east-facing Rochegrès as the source of finesse and supple tannin, and Roche Noire as the source of liveliness and juicy fruit. The manganese running through all three leaves an unmistakable mineral thread. Unlike Chermette's other crus, this wine sees a portion of barrique ageing, around twenty per cent, which suits the density of the fruit. Expect blue fruit and black cherry, an enveloping texture and delicately mouthcoating tannins.
It has the balance to drink now but rewards a few years in bottle. Serve at 16-18°C with charcuterie, roast pork or grilled mushrooms.
