Domaine Chermette Saint-Amour Les Champs-Grillés 2021

Domaine Chermette Saint-Amour Les Champs-Grillés comes from a single parcel of fifty-year-old vines in a climat that covers barely three hectares in total.

Saint-Amour is the northernmost of the ten Beaujolais crus, sitting where the granite of the region begins to give way to clay and limestone, a mix usually credited with the lighter, more delicate wines the appellation is known for. Chermette's holding runs against that grain: the vines are rooted in classic decomposed granite on the Bessay mountain, on a steep, high, south-east facing aspect. The parcel came to the domaine when an old friend could no longer manage the slope. Pierre-Marie Chermette works it as he does the rest of the range, with hand harvesting, natural fermentation and ageing in large old wood rather than new barrels, so the site rather than the cellar does the talking. Old vines and low yields make for a wine of surprising intensity for the appellation, combining the darker fruit and structure of the grower's Moulin-à-Vent with the weight of his Fleurie.

Drinking well on release and worth holding five to eight years. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, a charcuterie board or mushroom risotto.
