Description
Chermette's Saint-Amour comes from a tiny parcel of 50-year-old vines in the Champs-Grillés climat on the steep Bessay hillside.
Saint-Amour is the northernmost of the ten Beaujolais crus, straddling the border with the Mâconnais, and its soils mix granite with varying amounts of clay and limestone, a combination usually said to give lighter, more delicate wines. Chermette's vines, however, are rooted in classic decomposed granite. The parcel, part of a climat covering just three hectares in total, was offered to Pierre-Marie Chermette by an old friend who could no longer manage its steep aspect. Old vines, low yields and a high, southeast-facing position give a wine of surprising intensity, combining the sinew of the domaine's Moulin-à-Vent with the perfume of its Fleurie. It is racy and succulent, with supple red fruit, blood orange and clove-like spice held by measured tannin.
Drink now and over the next five to eight years, with roast pork, charcuterie or duck, at 16°C.
