Description
Clos de Tart is a walled grand cru in Morey-Saint-Denis and one of the few vineyards in Burgundy to have stayed in one piece as a single monopole since it was planted.
The Clos was established by the Bernardine nuns of Notre-Dame de Tart in the twelfth century and has changed hands only a handful of times since, which is why its 7.5 hectares have never been carved up between growers in the way most Burgundian grands crus have. The site sits mid-slope on the Morey hillside, and its rows run up and down the incline rather than across it, an unusual arrangement that helps drainage on the clay and limestone soils. Those soils shift markedly from one end of the Clos to the other, so the vineyard is worked and picked as a series of separate parcels, fermented apart and assembled only at blending. Ageing is in Burgundian barrel, with the new-oak component judged against the weight of the fruit.
A wine built for the long haul, and best given a decade or more in a cool cellar; serve at 16-18°C with roast game birds, duck or a mature hard cheese.
