Description
Domaine Clos de Tart Grand Cru is a certified organic monopole grand cru occupying a single walled vineyard at the top of Morey-Saint-Denis.
The clos has been in unbroken single ownership since the twelfth century, which is rare anywhere on the Côte d’Or. Average vine age is above sixty years and some parcels are past a hundred. The rows are planted north-south along the slope rather than across it, an orientation shared by perhaps one per cent of Burgundy’s vineyards; it was designed to limit erosion but also changes the pattern of sunlight and shading on the vines. The aspect is a consistent east-south-east, yet the clay-limestone geology is complex, with six different limestones identified, principally calcaires à entroques, white marl and hard Prémeaux limestone. Farming is organic and certified. Extraction was very gentle here, a single early foot treading followed by pumpovers, three weeks on skins and 22 months of ageing, with new oak now dialled back to 65 per cent and roughly 55 per cent whole bunches in the blend.
Approachable after a decade and capable of far longer. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, braised oxtail or a plate of hard mountain cheeses.
