Domaine Clos de Tart Grand Cru Clos de Tart Museum Release 2016

Domaine Clos de Tart Grand Cru is a walled monopole in Morey-Saint-Denis, one of the very few Burgundian grand crus held in single ownership, released here from the estate’s own cellars.

The clos covers a little over seven hectares at the top of the village, sitting between Bonnes-Mares and Clos des Lambrays, and has passed through only a handful of hands since it was planted by the nuns of Tart in the twelfth century. Its rows run north-south along the slope rather than across it, an orientation found in perhaps one per cent of Burgundy, which limits erosion and changes how light and shade fall on the fruit. Average vine age is above sixty years, with some parcels past a century, and the clay-limestone geology shifts several times across the vineyard. This museum release was fermented with roughly 60 per cent whole bunches and raised for nineteen months, four-fifths in new Tronçais barriques given a lighter toast, the remainder in one-year-old barrels alongside the first demi-muids used in the cellar.

Built for the long haul and best left for a decade or more yet. Serve at 16-18°C with roast venison, truffled potatoes or aged Comté.
