Domaine Clos de Tart Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru La Forge de Tart is grown inside the grand cru clos but deliberately declassified to premier cru.

Every grape in this wine could legally be labelled Clos de Tart. The domaine steps it down so that only the finest batches reach the grand vin, and La Forge takes fruit from younger vines, older than those in the village bottling, along with parcels that do not quite suit the grand cru blend. Even so the bar is high: anything below the estate’s standard is sold off in bulk or absorbed into the village wine. Alongside the eponymous La Forge parcel, Ballonge 2 and Plantation 2011, this release also carries declassified fruit from Jeanniard and Plantation 2005, both mid-slope on the Bonnes Mares side of the clos. The cuvée was traditionally destemmed and given a high proportion of new wood; Alessandro Noli has introduced 25 per cent whole bunches and cut new oak back to 45 per cent from around 80 under the previous regime.

Worth eight to fifteen years in the cellar. Serve at 16-18°C with roast squab, beef bourguignon or Époisses.
