Description

Domaine Daniel Bouland Chiroubles Chatenay, here in magnum, comes from a steep granite ridge in the highest cru of Beaujolais.

Chiroubles lies between Morgon and Fleurie at around 400 metres, making it the highest of the ten Beaujolais crus, and its upper-slope vineyards on granite and sandstone are known for a light-footed, fragrant style of Gamay. Bouland's version carries rather more substance than that reputation suggests. It comes from a 0.65-hectare parcel of 35- to 45-year-old vines on the steep, ridged incline of Chatenay, a north-facing site that is nevertheless warm, sheltered by the forest alongside it. Daniel Bouland is one of the most respected growers in the region, working old vines on single parcels with low yields and traditional semi-carbonic vinification in concrete, using little or no new wood. The magnum will hold the wine back and reward patience.

Drinking well from a year or two and good for eight in magnum. Serve at 16-18°C, lightly chilled if you prefer, with charcuterie, roast pork or a mushroom tart.
