Description
Domaine Daniel Bouland's Chiroubles Chatenay is a Gamay from the highest cru in Beaujolais, bottled here as a 1.5-litre magnum.
Perched between Morgon and Fleurie at about 400 metres, the vineyards of Chiroubles climb the upper slopes above both. Height and thin granite soils usually make this the most delicate of the Beaujolais crus, all lacy texture and sleek charm in Gerald Asher's phrase, though Bouland gives it more substance than that description suggests. His 0.65-hectare parcel lies on the steep, ridged incline of Chatenay, planted to vines of 35 to 45 years on the cru's granite and yellow sandstone. The site faces north, but a nearby forest shelters it and keeps it warm. The fruit is fermented naturally with whole bunches, in keeping with the rest of the domaine, and the wine is bottled without fining. It is supple and fleshy, with plenty of sweet cherry flavour, supporting acidity and a spicy finish, and the magnum format slows its development a little.
Ready to enjoy now and safe for a few years yet. It works with charcuterie, grilled sausages or a goat's cheese salad, served lightly chilled at 14–16°C.
