Description

Domaine Daniel Bouland Chiroubles Chatenay is a single-parcel Gamay from the highest cru in Beaujolais, raised in fibreglass and bottled on a new moon.

Chiroubles lies between Morgon and Fleurie at around 400 metres, higher than any other Beaujolais cru, and its wines have a reputation for perfume and lightness — Gerald Asher’s line about lacy texture and sleek charm is the one usually quoted. Bouland’s has rather more frame than that. Chatenay is a 0.65-hectare parcel of 35- to 45-year-old vines on a steep, ridged incline, on the granite and sandstone soils characteristic of the cru; a forest nearby shelters it, so despite the north-facing aspect it is a warm site. Bouland works with whole bunches and indigenous yeasts across his range, and for this release the wine was vinified in fibreglass rather than wood, with bottling timed to a new moon — the kind of detail he pays attention to.

Drinking now and good for four or five years. Serve at 16°C with charcuterie, roast pork or a cheese board.
