Domaine Daniel Bouland Chiroubles Chatenay 3L DOUBLE MAGNUM 2023

Domaine Daniel Bouland's Chiroubles Chatenay comes from the highest vineyards in Beaujolais, offered here as a three-litre double magnum.

Chiroubles sits between Morgon and Fleurie at around 400 metres above sea level, higher than any other Beaujolais cru, and its vines occupy the upper slopes. Altitude and thin granite soils usually make it the most delicate of the ten crus — all lacy texture and sleek charm, as Gerald Asher put it. Bouland's version carries rather more stuffing than that, particularly in a powerful year. It comes from a 0.65-hectare parcel of 35- to 45-year-old vines on the steep, ridged incline of Chatenay, on the cru's typical granite and yellow sandstone soils. The site faces north but is sheltered by nearby forest, so it stays warm despite the aspect. As elsewhere in the range, yields are low, fermentation is natural and whole-bunch, and the wine is bottled without fining. It is supple and open in style, with fleshy texture, sweet cherry fruit, supporting acidity and a spice-laden close; the large format simply buys it more time.

Delicious now and able to hold for several years at this size. Pour it with charcuterie, roast chicken or andouillette, lightly chilled at 14–16°C.
