Description

Domaine Daniel Bouland Côte de Brouilly Cuvée Mélanie is drawn from 70-year-old vines on the blue volcanic soils of Mont Brouilly.

Côte de Brouilly is the cru that climbs the slopes of Mont Brouilly itself, and its defining feature is the terres bleues, a blue-tinted volcanic diorite that gives the wines their particular mineral profile and firm frame. Named after Daniel Bouland's daughter, Cuvée Mélanie comes from a small, steep parcel of roughly half a hectare within the lieu-dit of Tête Noire, directly above Château Thivin. The vines are 70 years old and planted at the very high density of 12,000 per hectare, which drives roots down and keeps yields low. As with every Bouland cuvée, fermentation is natural and uses whole bunches, with no additions and no new oak, so the character of the site carries through. It is a serious expression of the cru with real depth.

It will improve in the cellar for a decade, and pairs with roast beef, game birds or a mushroom dish, much as a good Nuits-Saint-Georges would. Serve at 16 degrees.
