Domaine Daniel Bouland Côte de Brouilly Cuvée Mélanie 3L DOUBLE MAGNUM 2023

Domaine Daniel Bouland Côte de Brouilly Cuvée Mélanie, in three-litre double magnum, is named after the grower's daughter and grown on the blue volcanic soils of Mont Brouilly.

Côte de Brouilly covers the slopes of Mont Brouilly itself, and its blue-tinted volcanic rock, known locally as terres bleues, gives the cru a mineral profile quite unlike the granite of the northern Beaujolais crus. Bouland's parcel lies in the lieu-dit of Tête Noire, directly above Château Thivin, on a steep site planted at 12,000 vines per hectare with vines now around seventy years old. As with every wine here, the cuvée is born of low yields and natural whole-bunch fermentation with indigenous yeasts. The terroir gives a deeper-pitched wine than the domaine's Chiroubles, with plusher, darker fruit and more pronounced spice, and this cuvée has fleshy weight held in check by its structural frame.

Give it two or three years and drink over the following decade; serve with braised beef, roast lamb or game at 14-16°C.
