Description
Domaine Daniel Bouland Morgon Bellevue Sable, in magnum, comes from the sandy half of the Bellevue vineyard, on weathered granite.
Morgon is one of the largest and firmest of the Beaujolais crus, and Bouland is among the growers who show how finely it can be read parcel by parcel. His holding at Bellevue is split into two cuvées, one for the sand and one for the stones, and the two parcels are separated by nothing more than a small track; as Bouland puts it, the soil is completely different. The weathered sandy granite of the Sable parcel sits on a steeper slope than the Cailloux side, and the vines, forty to fifty years old, are on Vialla rootstock, a low-yielding stock well suited to sandy, granitic and deep clay-silica soils. Tasted side by side, the Sable is the more giving of the two, broader in the mouth and with juicier tannins, while keeping the energy that runs through the range.
Drinking well now and, in magnum, good for another eight years. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, pork belly or a mushroom risotto.
