Domaine Daniel Bouland Morgon Bellevue Sable 2023

Domaine Daniel Bouland Morgon Bellevue Sable is the sand half of a pair of cuvées from two Bellevue parcels separated only by a track.

Bouland splits his Bellevue holding in Morgon into two wines, one for the sandy ground and one for the stones — Sable and Cailloux. The parcels lie either side of a small track, yet the soils are entirely different: weathered sandy granite here against rockier ground there. The Sable slope is also steeper, and the 40- to 50-year-old vines are on Vialla, a low-yielding rootstock well suited to sandy, granitic or deep argilo-siliceous soils. Tasted alongside its neighbour, the Sable cuvée is the more yielding of the two, with greater width across the palate and juicier tannins, where the Cailloux is the firmer wine. Both are made the same way, with whole-bunch fermentation on indigenous yeasts and ageing in old wood, so the difference on show is soil and rootstock rather than cellar work.

Approachable now and capable of five years or more. Serve at 16°C with charcuterie, roast duck or a pork and fennel sausage.
