Domaine Daniel Bouland Morgon Bellevue Sable 3L DOUBLE MAGNUM 2023

Domaine Daniel Bouland's Morgon Bellevue Sable comes from the sandy half of a lieu-dit split in two by a single track, bottled here as a three-litre double magnum.

Bouland farms old bush vines across Haut-Morgon, in the hilly north-west of the appellation, and now bottles several of its lieux-dits separately. Bellevue is one of them, and its soils divide sharply: sand on one side of a small track, stones on the other, so the estate makes a cuvée from each. The Sable parcel is weathered sandy granite on the steeper slope, planted to vines of 40 to 50 years on Vialla rootstock, a low-yielding stock well adapted to sandy, granitic and deep argilo-siliceous ground. Yields are small, fermentation is natural and whole-bunch, and the wine is not fined. Tasted beside the Cailloux bottling, Sable is the more yielding of the pair, wider through the middle with juicier tannins, while keeping the drive that marks the domaine. A double magnum holds roughly four standard bottles and matures more slowly than a 750ml.

Drinking well now and worth keeping five years or more in this format. It suits roast lamb, a charcuterie board or a hard sheep's cheese, served at around 16°C.
