Description
Domaine Daniel Bouland's Corcelette Vieilles Vignes Sable is drawn from vines planted in 1926 on granitic sand, bottled in magnum.
Corcelette is the Morgon climat in hilly Haut-Morgon where most of Bouland's old bush vines sit, and he makes three site-specific wines from it. This one comes from the sandy ground the name records — sable — where the granite has weathered to a deep, free-draining sand. Its sister cuvée, Cailloux, comes from the rocky part of the same climat. The vines here went in during 1926, so the vieilles vignes description is literal rather than decorative, and those gnarled old trunks crop very lightly. Fermentation is natural and whole-bunch in the domaine's usual manner, and the wine was raised in an old foudre rather than in barrique, so wood leaves no mark on it. The result is layered, inky and mouthcoating, with genuine finesse for a wine of this depth, closing on intense mineral character and a nip of old-vine grip. A magnum will slow it down further.
Worth three to six years at this size, and good now with a decant. Serve with roast duck, braised beef or a mature hard cheese at around 16°C.
