Description

Domaine Daniel Bouland Morgon Corcelette Vieilles Vignes Sable comes from Gamay planted in 1926 on granitic sand in the Corcelette lieu-dit.

Morgon is the largest and most structured of the ten Beaujolais crus, but Corcelette, on the Chiroubles side of the commune, is its lighter-footed corner: decomposed granitic sand rather than the weathered schist of the Côte du Py, giving more perfume and rounder tannin. Daniel Bouland bottles his Corcelette holdings separately by soil, and this is the sand cuvée — sable means sand — the sister wine to the stonier Cailloux. The vines were planted in 1926, so the Vieilles Vignes on the label is meant literally. Fermentation is whole-bunch with indigenous yeasts, the cap trodden by foot late in the process to draw the ferment out, and the wine is raised in old foudre, so there is no new oak. Yields from the old trunks are naturally small.

Enjoyable now but built to reward five to eight years in the cellar. Serve at 16°C with charcuterie, roast duck or a mushroom risotto.
