Description

Domaine Daniel Bouland Morgon Délys Vignes de 1926 comes from a single hectare of ninety-year-old vines on the Morgon–Chiroubles border.

Morgon is the sturdiest of the Beaujolais crus, and Délys is a terroir at the end of the Corcelette valley, historically known by that name long before it appeared on a label. This wine used to reach the trade simply as Morgon Vieilles Vignes; it is now labelled Morgon Les Délys Vignes plantées en 1926. Daniel Bouland's gnarled old vines sit on a south-east facing slope planted at 10,000 vines per hectare, and their age shows in the depth and layering of the wine rather than in any heaviness. Bouland has said that if he could source the grafting material he needs he would replant the parcel, since it yields far too little juice for his liking — a problem his customers are content to live with. It is Gamay at its most serious.

Drink now with air, or cellar for eight to ten years. Serve at 16–18°C with roast pork, duck rillettes or a mushroom tart.
