Description
Domaine Daniel Bouland Morgon Délys Vignes de 1926, in three-litre double magnum, comes from a single hectare of century-old vines on the Morgon-Chiroubles border.
This wine used to arrive simply as Morgon Vieilles Vignes, without a vineyard name, and is now labelled for the parcel and the year of planting. It comes from a hectare of 100-year-old vines at the end of the Corcelette valley on the border with Chiroubles, a terroir historically known as Délys. The gnarled old vines sit on a south-east-facing slope planted at 10,000 vines per hectare, and yields are minute; Bouland has said he would replant if he could find suitable grafting material. Fermentation is natural and whole-bunch, as throughout the domaine, and the wine is raised in foudre. It is always deep and chewy in youth and built for long ageing, saturated with dark berry fruit and marked by pepper, liquorice and forest-floor complexity, with a length of flavour that is rare for the region.
This needs five years and will reward fifteen or more in double magnum; serve with roast venison, beef or truffled dishes at 14-16°C.
