Description

Domaine Daniel Bouland Morgon Pré Jourdan is a magnum from a recently acquired parcel of seventy-year-old vines on the Morgon-Fleurie border.

Morgon is the most substantial of the Beaujolais crus after Moulin-à-Vent, and Daniel Bouland has long been one of its most precise growers, working a handful of small parcels and bottling each separately. Pré Jourdan is his newest, a plot just large enough to fill a single large cask, in this case a youngish Rousseau foudre. The soils are predominantly granitic sand, as they are in his Bellevue and Corcelette parcels, but they run deeper here, which gives a fleshier and more openly aromatic Morgon than the others in the range. The vines are around seventy years old. Bouland's method is traditional Beaujolais: hand picking, whole bunches, natural fermentation and ageing in old wood. This bottling is a 1.5-litre magnum, a format that slows the wine's development in bottle.

Drinking now and, in magnum, worth cellaring eight to twelve years. Serve at 16-18°C with roast lamb, duck confit or a mushroom pie.
