Description
Roche Guillon is a steep, terraced lieu-dit in Fleurie, and Domaine de Fa farms its certified organic, biodynamically managed vines at up to 350 metres above sea level.
Fleurie is one of the ten Beaujolais crus, planted to Gamay on granite, and this west-facing hillside site sits high on the slope close to Poncié, hemmed in by forest and stream. Frédéric Lafarge farms vines on the same hill. The forty-year-old vines here are rooted in pink granitic sand mixed through with limestone and clay, a soil known locally as gore. Domaine de Fa, the Beaujolais project of the Graillot family, is taking advantage of the new Beaujolais rules that permit higher planting densities, and has set up a new trellis so the team can run a taller canopy. Hail cost half the crop in this release, which has left a more concentrated and tannic wine than the site usually gives; the domaine has held back a quarter of the production to release after ten years.
Worth cellaring, and it will reward five to ten years; serve at 16-18°C with roast pork, duck or a mushroom risotto.
