Domaine de l'Arlot Côte de Nuits Clos du Chapeau is a 1.6-hectare walled monopole at Comblanchien, offered here as a cellar release held back by the estate.

Côte de Nuits-Villages gathers the two ends of the Côte de Nuits, and Comblanchien is one of its five villages, a short way south of the domaine's cellars at Prémeaux-Prissey. The Clos du Chapeau came into the property alongside the Clos des Forêts when the merchant Jules Belin bought the estate in 1891, and it has stayed in the same hands since, passing to AXA Millésimes in 1987. The clos sits on clay and limestone in a village whose hard stone has long been quarried for building, and the domaine keeps yields low and selects small berries. It is treated much as the premier crus are: hand picking, indigenous yeasts, fermentation in stainless steel with gentle handling, then ageing in barrel of which only a minority is new. Farming has been organic since 2000 and biodynamic since 2003.

Ready now and good for a few years yet, and the most approachable red the domaine makes. Serve at 16-18°C with roast chicken, charcuterie or braised lentils.
