Domaine de la Grosse Pierre Chiroubles Grille-Midi 2021

Domaine de la Grosse Pierre Chiroubles Grille-Midi comes from a single plot of fifty-year-old vines straddling the boundary between Chiroubles and Fleurie.

Chiroubles is the highest of the Beaujolais crus and typically the most delicate, its pink granite soils giving Gamay a floral lift and a light frame. Grille-Midi is one of its best-known lieux-dits, and this 0.8-hectare parcel sits right on the line where Chiroubles meets Fleurie, facing south-west at 420 metres. The vines are around fifty years old and planted at the traditional density of 9,000 per hectare, on decomposed pink granite that drains freely and holds little water. The wine is matured for eleven months in a combination of demi-muids and 600-litre stainless steel, an approach that adds a little breadth without imposing oak character on a cru whose appeal rests on transparency and perfume.

Best drunk within five years, lightly chilled, with charcuterie, roast chicken or grilled salmon. Serve at 14-16°C.
