Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 1.5L MAGNUM 2023

Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc, in magnum, is atypically Roussanne-dominant, with that variety making up as much as 70% of the blend.

White Châteauneuf-du-Pape accounts for only a small share of the appellation's production, and Marcoux's is among the more highly regarded examples, admired by the French press for the farming behind it as much as the winemaking. Most of the Roussanne and Bourboulenc comes from two parcels: Les Esqueirons, where cool, limestone-based soils suit white varieties, and Les Bosquets, where Bourboulenc supplies citric freshness and drive to offset the layered Roussanne. Grenache Blanc and Clairette make up the balance, co-planted among predominantly red parcels. The Armenier family farms only about a hectare of white grapes, with a further fifth of a hectare of Clairette coming on stream. In the cellar the grapes are pressed as whole bunches and ferment naturally, mostly in steel tank, with a growing portion raised in low-impact Stockinger cask and some sandstone amphorae now in the mix.

Drinking well young and worth cellaring five to ten years in magnum. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, grilled crayfish or a saffron risotto.
