Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 2024

Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc is an atypically Roussanne-dominant white from one of the appellation's most respected estates.

White Châteauneuf-du-Pape accounts for only a small share of the appellation, and most versions lean on Grenache Blanc and Clairette. Marcoux inverts that, building the wine around Roussanne at up to 70 per cent and filling it out with Bourboulenc, Grenache Blanc and Clairette. Most of the fruit comes from two parcels: Les Esqueirons, where cool limestone soils suit white varieties, and Les Bosquets, where the Bourboulenc contributes citric drive to balance the weight of the Roussanne. In the cellar the grapes are pressed as whole bunches and fermentation is natural, mostly in stainless steel. An increasing share is now raised in large low-impact Stockinger casks, and sandstone amphorae have recently joined the range of vessels, both chosen to add texture without oak flavour.

Good on release and capable of ageing a decade, it suits roast chicken, grilled crayfish or a hard sheep's cheese; serve at 10–12°C.
