Description
Domaine de Marcoux's Châteauneuf-du-Pape rouge is blended from 13 biodynamically farmed parcels spread across the appellation, bottled here in magnum.
Marcoux is one of the longest-established biodynamic estates in Châteauneuf, and its classic red is deliberately assembled from across the appellation rather than from a single sector. The 13 parcels concentrate on the famous Crau plateau but take in a wide spread of soils: sand at Charbonnières, red clay and galets at L'Arnesque and Les Bosquets, limestone and white clay at Les Esqueirons and Beaurenard, and red clay and gravel at Les Galimardes, Les Serres and Les Plagnes in the south. Each parcel is vinified separately before blending, and anything that does not meet the standard is declassified to Côtes du Rhône or sold off. This year's blend is 80 per cent Grenache with 10 per cent Mourvèdre, 7 per cent Syrah and 3 per cent Cinsault. Fermentation is natural, and the wine spent 18 months in concrete vat — up to 90 per cent — and large oak, with no new wood at all, before bottling unfiltered.
Approachable young thanks to its finely woven tannins, and good for fifteen years or more in magnum. Serve with roast lamb, a daube of beef or grilled game at 16–18°C.
