Description
Marcoux's Châteauneuf-du-Pape is assembled from thirteen biodynamically farmed parcels spread right across the appellation.
This year's blend is eighty per cent Grenache, ten per cent Mourvèdre, seven per cent Syrah and three per cent Cinsault. The parcels concentrate on the famous Crau plateau but take in a wide range of soils: the sands of Charbonnières, the red clay and galets of L'Arnesque and Les Bosquets, the limestone and white clay of Les Esqueirons and Beaurenard, and the red clay and gravel of Les Galimardes, Les Serres and Les Plagnes in the south. That spread lets the domaine make a wine that reflects Châteauneuf as a whole and keeps the balance steady from year to year, since each parcel is vinified separately and anything that does not make the grade is declassified. As usual the wines were naturally fermented and raised for eighteen months in concrete, up to ninety per cent, and large oak, with no new wood, then bottled unfiltered.
Approachable early for a wine of this weight but built for fifteen years or more; serve at 16-18°C with roast lamb, daube of beef or hard sheep's cheese.
