Description
Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge is blended from 13 biodynamically farmed parcels spread across the appellation's full range of soils.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape is unusual among French appellations for its patchwork of soils, and Marcoux sets out to represent the whole of it rather than a single terroir. The domaine's 13 parcels are concentrated on the La Crau plateau but reach across the sandy ground at Charbonnières, red clay and galets at L'Arnesque and Les Bosquets, limestone and white clay at Les Esqueirons and Beaurenard, and the red clay and gravel of Les Galimardes, Les Serres and Les Plagnes in the south. All are farmed biodynamically. Each parcel is vinified separately and any that falls short is declassified before blending. This release is 80 per cent Grenache with 10 per cent Mourvèdre, 7 per cent Syrah and 3 per cent Cinsault, naturally fermented, raised up to 90 per cent in concrete with the balance in large oak, and bottled unfiltered after 18 months.
Approachable young by the standards of the appellation, and will reward five to twelve years. Serve at 16-18°C with slow-roast lamb shoulder, a beef daube or hard sheep's cheese.
