Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge Vieilles Vignes 2019

The Vieilles Vignes is Marcoux's rarest Châteauneuf, drawn from three parcels of vines planted around the turn of the twentieth century and bottled only in the years the estate judges worth it.

The fruit comes from Charbonnières and Les Esqueirons. Charbonnières, planted in 1900, lies on the northern side of the Crau plateau, mostly on sandy soils over Molassic sandstone, and is almost entirely Grenache with a few rows of Mourvèdre. The Esqueirons plot sits behind the ruins of the château on the western side of the hill, where the Grenache, with a little Roussanne among it, is rooted in limestone and white clay; part was planted in 1900 and the rest in 1949. The blend is ninety-five per cent Grenache and five per cent Mourvèdre, handled exactly as the estate's classique is, so the difference in the glass comes from the age of the vines and their sites rather than the cellar. No new oak is used; the wine is fermented naturally, raised eighteen months in concrete and large foudre, and bottled unfiltered.

A wine for the long haul that will keep for two decades and repays decanting; serve at 16-18°C with roast lamb, game or a mature hard cheese.
