Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge Vieilles Vignes 2020

Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge Vieilles Vignes is drawn from two parcels of vines planted in 1900 and is bottled only in the years the family judges worthy.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape covers the terraces between Orange and Avignon, where Grenache dominates a permitted palette of thirteen varieties across galets, sand and limestone. Marcoux's old-vine cuvée comes from two parcels. Charbonnières, planted in 1900, lies on the northern side of the Crau plateau on mostly sandy soils over molasse sandstone and is almost entirely Grenache with a few rows of Mourvèdre. Les Esqueirons sits behind the ruined château on the western side of the hill, its Grenache and a little Roussanne rooted in limestone and white clay, part planted in 1900 and the rest in 1949. The fruit is handled exactly as the domaine's Classique is: naturally fermented, then raised for eighteen months in concrete and large oak foudre with no new oak at all, and bottled unfiltered.

Approachable after a decant but built for fifteen to twenty years. Serve at 16-18°C with slow-roasted lamb shoulder, daube of beef or aged hard cheese.
