Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge Vieilles Vignes 2023

Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes is drawn from parcels of Grenache planted as far back as 1900, and is bottled only in the years the estate judges worthy of it.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape spreads over the terraces and plateaux between Orange and Avignon, and although thirteen varieties are permitted, Grenache does most of the work on its sand, galets and molasse. Domaine de Marcoux, run by the Armenier family, draws this cuvée from three parcels of exceptionally old vines in two lieux-dits. Charbonnières, planted in 1900, lies on the northern side of the Crau plateau on sandy soils over molasse sandstone, and is almost entirely Grenache with a few rows of Mourvèdre. Les Esqueirons sits behind the château ruins on the western side of the hill, where Grenache and a little Roussanne are rooted in limestone and white clay, some vines dating from 1900 and the rest from 1949. The handling is deliberately minimal: spontaneous fermentation, no new oak at any point, and eighteen months in concrete and large oak foudres before the wine is bottled unfiltered.

Approachable after four or five years and built to hold for two decades in a cool cellar. Serve at 16-18°C with slow-roasted lamb shoulder, a beef daube or hard sheep’s milk cheese.
