Description
Marcoux's Côtes du Rhône comes from two hectares of old vines sitting right on the edge of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyard.
The two parcels lie in the northern sector near Orange: one hectare at Maucoil, planted in the 1930s, and another at Boislauzon planted in 1965, both farmed biodynamically by the Armenier sisters, whose domaine is one of the longest-standing biodynamic estates in the southern Rhône. The blend is eighty per cent Grenache with the balance in Syrah, Mourvèdre and a little Cinsault. Harvesting is by hand and fermentation runs with wild yeast in cement tanks, the wine resting on skins for around two weeks. There is no new oak. The result is silky and perfumed, with unoaked raspberry and strawberry fruit, a flick of bay leaf and garrigue, a velvet texture and fine, tapering chalky tannins on a long finish.
Drinking well now and good for five or six years; serve at 16-18°C with charcuterie, grilled lamb cutlets or a cheese course.
