Domaine de Marcoux Côtes du Rhône Rouge 2022

Domaine de Marcoux Côtes du Rhône Rouge is built largely from old-vine parcels sitting on the edge of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards.

Domaine de Marcoux is a biodynamic estate near Orange, best known for its Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and this Côtes du Rhône has long served as the introduction to the house style. It was traditionally drawn from two small parcels of old vines at the northern edge of the Châteauneuf vineyards: one hectare at Maucoil planted in the 1930s, and another at Bois Lauzon planted in 1965. Two newer parcels close to the winery have since joined the blend. The wine is Grenache and Syrah with a little Mourvèdre. Fruit is picked by hand and sorted twice, once in the vineyard and again in the cellar, which is more attention than most wine at this level of the Rhône hierarchy receives. Fermentation runs on wild yeast in cement tanks, and there is no new oak, so the result is silky and perfumed rather than heavy.

Approachable on release and good over four or five years. Serve at 16-18°C with slow-roasted lamb shoulder, sausages or a mushroom ragù.
