Domaine de Marcoux Lirac La Lorentine 2020

Domaine de Marcoux Lirac La Lorentine is a biodynamically farmed Lirac from red clay, limestone and galet soils at Saint-Laurent-des-Arbres.

Lirac lies on the right bank of the Rhône opposite Châteauneuf-du-Pape and shares much of its geology without the reputation or the price. Domaine de Marcoux, better known for its Châteauneuf, farms La Lorentine in the valley of Balouvière, and the Armenier sisters have spent years restoring life to soils long neglected, working organically and biodynamically. The blend is half Grenache with equal parts Syrah and Mourvèdre, fermented on wild yeasts and raised for fifteen months in concrete and old wooden barrels. What stands out is the balance of intensity and finesse: the weight in the mouth is almost Northern Rhône in shape, with tender berry fruit, baking spice and a stony mineral edge, something perfumed from the Syrah and something deep and inky from the Mourvèdre.

Drinking well now and worth eight to ten years. Serve at 16-18°C with roast lamb, beef daube or grilled eggplant.
