Domaine de Marcoux Lirac La Lorentine 2021

Domaine de Marcoux Lirac La Lorentine is a biodynamically farmed southern Rhône red from the galet-strewn clay and limestone of Saint-Laurent-des-Arbres.

Lirac lies on the right bank of the Rhône across from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, on much the same mix of red clay, limestone and rolled galet stones, and it has long been the more affordable neighbour. The Armenier sisters of Domaine de Marcoux, better known for their Châteauneuf, farm the Lorentine vineyard in the heart of the appellation in the valley of Balouvière, and have spent years restoring life to soils that had been neglected, working organically and biodynamically. The blend is half Grenache with equal parts Syrah and Mourvèdre, fermented with indigenous yeasts and raised for fifteen months in concrete and old wooden barrels, so the wine keeps the purity and balance that mark the house style. It is generous and textured without heaviness, closing long and fresh on fine, powdery tannins.

Approachable on release and good for eight to ten years. Serve at 16-18°C with lamb shoulder, grilled lamb cutlets or a ratatouille.
