Description
Domaine de Marcoux Lirac La Lorentine is a biodynamically farmed single-vineyard red that, in this release, leads with Syrah and Mourvèdre rather than Grenache.
Lirac lies on the right bank of the Rhône opposite Châteauneuf-du-Pape, sharing much of its neighbour's galet-strewn soils without the name or the price. The Lorentine vineyard sits at the heart of the appellation on the red clay, limestone and galet ground of Saint-Laurent-des-Arbres, in the valley of Balouvière. The Armenier family, long-standing biodynamic growers at Châteauneuf, have spent years restoring life to what had been a neglected terroir, working the soils by cultivation rather than herbicide and farming organically and biodynamically. The blend is usually Grenache-dominant; here it was made from 40% Syrah and 40% Mourvèdre with 20% Grenache. Fermentation ran on indigenous yeasts and the wine was raised for 15 months in a combination of concrete, foudre and old wooden barrels, so the oak is a maturation vessel rather than a flavour.
Approachable from two or three years and good for a decade. Serve at 16-18°C with slow-roasted lamb, beef ribs or a mushroom and olive stew.
