Domaine de Marcoux Lirac La Lorentine 2023

Domaine de Marcoux Lirac La Lorentine is a biodynamically farmed single-vineyard red from an appellation the Armenier family has spent years rehabilitating.

Lirac lies on the right bank of the Rhône, across the river from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and shares much of its neighbour's soil profile without the same reputation or price. The Lorentine vineyard sits in the heart of the appellation at Saint-Laurent-des-Arbres, in the valley of Balouvière, on red clay, limestone and rolled galet stones. The Armenier family, who also farm at Châteauneuf, have worked these vines organically and biodynamically for many years, restoring soils that had been neglected. This cuvée is usually Grenache-led, but the 2023 was made from 40% Syrah, 40% Mourvèdre and 20% Grenache. Fermentation was with indigenous yeasts, and the wine was raised for 15 months in a mix of concrete, foudres and old wooden barrels, with no new oak.

Approachable after a year or two and capable of a decade; match it with slow-cooked lamb, beef daube or hard sheep's cheese. Serve at 16-18°C.
