Domaine de Marcoux Vin de France Raisin de Loup NV

Domaine de Marcoux Raisin de Loup is a Vin de France red from two small plots on the alluvial plain below Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

The land lies between the river Rhône and the Châteauneuf zone proper, historically where local growers kept their small holdings of vin de table vines, which is why the wine carries the Vin de France designation rather than an appellation. Domaine de Marcoux is an organically farmed estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape run by the Armenier family, and Sophie Armenier is explicit that the intention here is an everyday red rather than a scaled-down version of the grand vin. The blend is Grenache and Syrah with a small share of Caladoc, an obscure crossing of Grenache and Malbec. Fermentation is natural and ageing takes place in cement vats, with gentle extraction and no oak influence at all. Armenier calls it her petit Rhône. The name translates roughly as grapes of the wolf, the local term for the black nightshade that grows among the vines.

Made for drinking now rather than keeping. Serve at 16°C, or lightly chilled, with sausages, roast vegetables or a bowl of ratatouille.
