Description
Domaine Denis Mortet Aux Beaux Bruns is the estate’s smallest parcel apart from its holding in Chambertin, at just 0.22 hectares.
Aux Beaux Bruns is a Premier Cru on the lower part of the Chambolle-Musigny slope, facing east, where the soil is white marl with a good deal of limestone but also enough depth of clay to give the wine its texture. The name means the beautiful browns and its origin has been lost; it may refer to the habits of the Cistercian monks who once farmed here, since it plainly does not describe the pale soil. Domaine Denis Mortet is a Gevrey estate, so this is an outlier in the range, and at 0.22 hectares it is the smallest parcel the family works apart from Chambertin. Allocations are correspondingly tiny. The 2023 was vinified with 80 per cent whole bunches, in line with Arnaud Mortet’s move towards gentler extraction and greater lift.
Attractive from three or four years and good for a dozen. Serve at 16-18°C with roast quail, mushroom dishes or a soft rind cheese.
