Description
Domaine Denis Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Champeaux comes from four small plots of 80-year-old vines that are ploughed by horse.
Les Champeaux lies high on the slope at the Brochon end of Gevrey-Chambertin, next to Les Evocelles, and is one of the village's more picturesque sites, its eroded limestone walls covered in creepers and wildflowers. The soils are very stony with red clay, and the mother rock lies close to the surface, which restricts vigour and keeps berries small. Mortet's holding totals half a hectare across four parcels, worked by horse to avoid compacting those thin soils. The altitude gives the wine the cool, fruit-of-the-forest finesse and freshness typical of the northern end of the appellation, over the powerful, ripe fruit the site delivers. In this release the domaine used 20% new wood and 30% hand-destemmed fruit, a light touch in the cellar for a wine made in very small volumes.
Approachable from five years and good for fifteen or more. Serve at 16-18°C with roast lamb, mushroom risotto or a plate of charcuterie.
