Description
Domaine Denis Mortet Les Champonnets is a Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru from one of the commune’s more refined sites, on notably deep soil.
Les Champonnets lies on the mid-slope north of the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, in the run of Premiers Crus that includes Champeaux and Les Cazetiers, but on ground that carries more depth of soil than its stonier neighbours. That gives a wine with flesh and a rounder frame, and it is generally counted among the more elegant crus of a commune better known for power. Domaine Denis Mortet, founded in 1991 and run since 2006 by Arnaud Mortet, works about eleven hectares centred on Gevrey and has moved steadily towards lighter extraction and more whole-bunch fermentation over the past decade. This cuvée was vinified with 50 per cent whole bunches and raised in a quarter new oak, restrained by the standards the estate set in its early years.
Give it four or five years and expect it to hold for fifteen. Serve at 16-18°C with roast lamb, game birds or a mature hard cheese.
*Every effort is made to ensure the current vintage is accurate; however, variations can occur. If you are after a specific vintage, please contact us prior to ordering.
