Domaine Denis Mortet Grand Cru Bonnes-Mares 2019

Mortet's Bonnes-Mares is drawn from two parcels totalling just thirty-five ares of sixty-year-old vines, yielding only three barrels in a normal year.

Bonnes-Mares straddles the boundary between Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis and is unusual among grand crus in having two distinct soil types: the pale terres blanches in the north, which give structure and length, and the redder terres rouges to the south, which give flesh. Most of the domaine's holding lies in the terres blanches at the heart of the vineyard, with a smaller millerandée parcel closer to the village. Millerandage produces small, seedless berries with a high skin-to-juice ratio and adds concentration. Arnaud Mortet has replanted six hundred vines here, and between that and consistently low yields the annual production runs to three barrels. The wine is raised in Cavin Aphrodite casks in the same restrained manner as the rest of the range.

A wine for the cellar, best from eight years and holding for twenty or more. Serve at 16-18°C with roast venison, beef bourguignon or Époisses.
